Last week, Lindsay Roberts threw her hat into the ring for a seat on the Fair Board.
Roberts grew up in Bryan County and graduated from Calera High School. She spent much time at the fairgrounds while competing in 4-H and FFA activities and more.
She said her reasons for running for a seat on the board were pure and simple.
“I just want to give back to the organizations, and the fairgrounds, and really to the men and women volunteers that have shaped my life,” Roberts said. “I want to pay forward to today’s youth all of the positive attributes that so many of the Fair Board members and Livestock Show volunteers have passed on to me.
“I’ll never forget how much they boosted my confidence with just the ‘Attagirls’ and the ethics they taught us by making us follow the rules and taught us leadership and volunteerism by watching their hard work through even sometimes injuries and exhaustion from all their volunteer work.”
Roberts was recognized in 2018 as a Significant Woman in Oklahoma Agriculture. And although she has helped a number of others with campaigns, she has never run for anything.
“I’ve actually been in the political realm since I was 7 or 8 years old when my grandpa helped Jim Dunegan run for state representative. I got to volunteer making homemade campaign signs for Jim’s first election.”
She is looking to fill a seat in District 1 on the board.
“I just think I’ll bring a fresh perspective to the board while honoring the traditions that we all hold so dear,” Roberts said. “My years of agricultural accounting could be of use to the board and I hope my youth helps bring younger volunteers to help with the industry that is so deep-rooted in our state and in our country.”
The election will be held on Saturday, Feb. 27, at the Bryan County Community Building at the fairgrounds in Durant.
