Robert Syler, Sr.

Robert E. “Bob” Syler, Sr, a resident of Cartwright, Okla., and proud veteran of the United States Army, joined his Savior on Aug. 29, 2021, at the age of 89. He was born in Mead, Okla., to Jefferson Davis Syler and Lillie (McAllister) Syler on Feb. 25, 1932.

Bob married the love of his life, Mary Allie Webb on March 28, 1958.

Bob was born during the Great Depression and developed a strong work ethic. He served his country proudly in Germany for the United States Army from 1952-1955. He had many memories of his years in the service and enjoyed sharing them.

Robert was a voracious reader and loved the outdoors. He was an avid fisherman and quail hunter, teaching his boys to fish at an early age. His garden and his flowers were his passion. Even when his eyesight began to fail, he insisted he mow and trim both his and his daughter’s yards. He was a fan of Bluegrass, Western Swing and Gospel music. He was very mechanically inclined and enjoyed fixing things.

Robert is survived by his sister Easter (Judy) McGehee; children: son, Robert E Syler Jr. and wife Laura of Silo, Okla., granddaughter, Jessica Tuma and husband Michael and great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Kaleigh and Owen Tuma of Chicago, Ill.; granddaughter, The Honorable Kaitlyn Allen and husband Scott and great-grandson, Everett Allen of Edmond, Okla.; son, Glenn Keith Syler and wife Nanciann of Sherman, Texas, granddaughter, Keven Allie Wigley and husband Matt, great-grandchildren, Genevieve and Benjamin Wigley of Weatherford, Texas; and daughter, Lisa Maxey of Cartwright, Okla., grandson Zachary Maxey and wife Brandi and great-grandchildren, Creek, Raynger and Woods Maxey of Calera, Okla.; grandson, Robert Colby Maxey and wife Weslina and great-grandchildren Tedwin and Olivia Maxey of Durant, Okla.; grandson, Krister Maxey and wife Ariel, great-grandchildren, Anzalee, and Liana Maxey of Calera, Okla., and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Syler was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary Allie; his brothers: Wesley, J.D, Claude, Hubert, Clyde Lee and sister, Lucretia Rogers and son-in-law Tedwin Maxey.

Family hour will be from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 1 at the Holmes~Coffey~Murray Funeral Home in Durant, Okla.

A funeral service in honor of his life will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 2 at the Silo Baptist Church with Dr. Ray Earley officiating. Robert’s final earthly resting place will be the Highland Cemetery in Durant with Zach Maxey, Colby Maxey, Krister Maxey, Matt Wigley, JD Syler and Russell Marcum serving as pallbearers.

Services are under the direction of Holmes~Coffey~Murray Funeral Home in Durant, Okla.
