Margie Brown

Margie Brown, of Durant, Okla., passed from this life on Wednesday, September 14, 2022 at the age of 87. She was born on Tuesday, October 16, 1934 in Caddo, Okla., to Archie Arthur and Nora Bain (Winsett) Thornton.

She graduated from Caddo High School in 1953 and married Tom Brown on June 27, 1954 in Caddo, Okla. She was a resident of Bryan County since 1954, and was a member of Grace Baptist Church since 1960. She loved her church and served as their treasurer for 12 years. She was also their Sunday School teacher and taught several age groups. She worked at First Texoma National Bank for many years, along with being a bookkeeper for several businesses in Durant. Later, she became a teacher’s aide for Northwest Heights elementary school.

She loved sewing and making clothing for all of her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed singing in the choir and shopping for her great-grandchildren. She was an excellent seamstress and cook, and she loved cooking for her friends and family. She also loved being the family photographer and was their keeper of family history.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Archie Arthur and Nora Bain (Winsett) Thornton; her husband, Tom Brown; son, Rex Leon Brown; brother, Doyle Thornton; and sister-in-law, Verda Thornton.

Survivors include her daughter, Yolanda Bristow and husband Brad of Durant, Okla.; grandchildren: Holly Ann Marcy and husband John of Durant, Okla., Brandy Ayriss and husband Matt of Arvada, Colo., Jennifer Wilcox and husband Shane of Durant, Okla., Scotty Sieber and wife Emily of Austin, Texas; great-grandchildren: Valorie Taylor of Durant, Okla.; Cheyenne Ayriss, Tori Ayriss, Joshlyn Ayriss, Emarie Wilcox, Ander Wilcox; brothers, Alvie Thornton and wife Shirley of Durant, Okla., Leonard Thornton and wife Cathy of Indianola, Okla., Darell Thornton and wife Verda of Durant, Okla., and the rest of the Thornton clan, as well as other numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday, September 20,2022 at Grace Baptist Church in Durant, Okla., with Pastors Anthony Williams and Shane Meshaya officiating. John Marcy, Shane Wilcox, Wendell Thornton, Zackry Thornton, Ron Blevins and Don Thorton served as pallbearers. Matt Ayriss and Robert Boehme were honorary pallbearers.

    So sorry to see Margie go. That whole family is made up of good people. Her late husband Tom was always good to talk to. Her late son-in-law, Bill Orr, had the best sense of humor I have ever had the priviledge to encounter. Rest in peace, Margie. I know you’ll be missed.
