DURANT – AllianceHealth Durant today announced that Hugh Matchen, RN, has been selected to receive its Nursing Excellence Award.

This peer-nominated award, given in recognition of the critical role nurses play in treating our patients, was open to qualifying RNs and LPNs working in a direct patient care position who consistently demonstrate characteristics synonymous with nursing excellence.

Hugh was chosen from among more than several nominations for his outstanding contributions in the areas of a true crisis. Hugh’s most striking trait is his overriding sense of compassion and empathy that extends well beyond the norm of what is required.

“AllianceHealth Durant is fortunate to have many outstanding nurses like Hugh among its ranks,” said Kevin Samrow, CEO of AllianceHealth Durant/Madill. “Nurses who deliver exemplary care, compassion and service, who understand the importance of teamwork and mentoring others, who can lead in times of crises, and who are true champions of promoting healthcare in our community.

“With an ongoing focus this year on the selfless efforts of healthcare professionals like Hugh, we are pleased to acknowledge the important contributions of our nursing professionals.”

Hugh joined AllianceHealth Durant in 2005 and in that time has set the bar high for how Emergency Department nurses care for patients. If the patient needs to make plans for homecare, he takes it upon himself to arrange that for the patient, before they leave the Emergency Department. He takes the time to educate the patient on what they will need and will make multiple phone calls to ensure that is completed. If for example, a patient has a broken leg, he will ensure they have a safe way to not only to leave the hospital, but a safe way to exit their car and into their home when they leave the ED.

In addition to receiving the Nursing Excellence Award itself, Hugh received a cash prize and a copy of “Shining the Light on All the Right” by Mark and Bonnie Barnes, co-founders of The DAISY Foundation, an international movement created to recognize and express gratitude for extraordinary nursing.

AllianceHealth Durant is Southeastern Oklahoma’s largest hospital—a 138-bed licensed acute care facility offering a range of inpatient and outpatient services. AllianceHealth Durant’s quality of care has been recognized by respected agencies and national accrediting bodies. AllianceHealth Durant is an accredited hospital by the Joint Commission. AllianceHealth Durant also earned Advanced Certification as a Primary Stroke Center by the Joint Commission.
