This week, on the House floor, we passed a concurrent resolution condemning the atrocities committed by the terrorist organization Hamas. This resolution solidifies our support for the State of Israel, one of our strongest allies.
As Americans and Oklahomans, we must support Israel and stand up for the innocent lives being attacked in the Holy Land. I want to extend my solidarity with the nation of Israel and the Jewish people. I understand that these are uncertain times, and my prayers go out for the enduring peace of Jerusalem.
I strongly encourage our national leaders to stand firmly alongside Israel, aiding their mission to safeguard their citizens and strengthen their foundations of democracy.
During the past week, I spent my time presenting bills to committees, and I am glad to share that two bills passed successfully. I was excited to see House Bill 1788 pass, and even though I’ve previously talked about it, I wanted to mention it again.
The primary goal of House Bill 1788 is to establish a tax credit for donations made to our pregnancy resource centers. The introduction of this legislation is a proactive step toward promoting a pro-life culture and ensuring that pregnant women have access to the support and resources they need.
The other bill is House Bill 3031, which proposes a fuel tax exemption for emergency medical service districts. This bill will allow more resources toward critical medical care rather than fuel expenses.
During the last session, the House passed House Bill 1955 to end the state grocery sales tax. It’s currently awaiting consideration in the Senate. Pro Temp Treat has recently publicized his support for ending the grocery sales tax.
Oklahoma is one of 13 states with sales tax on groceries. According to recent data, average Oklahomans spend nearly $300 per trip to the grocery store, putting the state in the top 10 in the nation for the highest grocery bill per week.
If passed, HB1955 would only apply to state sales taxes. It’s important to note that many counties and municipalities have their own sales taxes, and thus, groceries would still be subject to those local taxes. Hopefully, everyone can come together and help get this bill across the finish line and provide immediate relief to Oklahomans when they purchase groceries for their families.
