Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma issues statement about Gov. Kevin Stitt’s press conference

Choctaw Nation

DURANT – Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma Chief Gary Batton issued the following statement regarding Gov. Kevin Stitt’s press conference about tribal compacts.

“Gov. Stitt’s efforts to pressure the Legislature into changing direction are unlikely to succeed. As he knows, significant majorities voted to extend tobacco and vehicle compacts. Lawmakers clearly understand letting these agreements lapse would cost the state millions of dollars in revenue,” Batton said. “If the governor had been willing to work with tribes as equal parties we would not be at this impasse. Unfortunately, he remains unwilling to cooperate and do what is best for all Oklahomans.”

“The governor’s proposed compact to the Choctaw Nation included language allowing the state to terminate the agreement at any time. This is not acceptable,” Batton said.

“We thank the Legislature for its diligent and important work, and we look forward to the Legislature overriding these vetoes so tribes and state government can continue to produce benefits for all,” Batton said.

  2. Kenny Tisho says:

The governor talks about what’s the best interest for all Oklahomas, seems to forget tribal nations are Oklahoma’s too, and singles out the tribal nations and refuses to cooperate with what’s really good for all Oklahomans.

  3. Glenda Madden says:

Kevin Stitt’s attitude toward & lack of respect for Oklahoma’s Native Americans is shameful. He is the governor for ALL Oklahomans, not just White Republicans.

  4. Patty welch says:

Sttit’s needs to answer for his illegal use of funds for his payment to lawyers for his special committee he hired against the gaming decision a while back why is he allowed to carry on like this with his tantrums he’s playing with fire against the tribes I didn’t vote for him and will make sure everyone I know doesn’t either he needs to b out!

He is hard to get information to and texts not responded to also. I will go back and check my E-mail. Maybe his response went to the spam file. Hello Governor Stitt, I Would like to know who makes money off of the state of Oklahoma’s Deficit?? Why don’t you fire those on the Ok mining commission that do not know where the state boundaries are? He is from Oklahoma but does he know why our eastern state boundary is shaped like it is? Halito, (Hah-lih-toh) Thanks to all the Indian Chiefs, past and present who have tried to keep Oklahoma straight and true.

  9. Ernie says:

Tribes in Oklahoma are not paying their fair share of the actual revenue they take in in their so called Casinos across the state. I’m for change in the agreement, these people in the capital don’t know a thing about Casinos or the machines they have in them.

  10. Hazel Clark says:

Tribal Nations are Never Governed by Statehood Government.
The Pre Statehood Documents / Laws were Never Brought Forward by Congress for any Tribal Nations to use !!

  11. Charlette Ross Hearne says:

  15. Paula McMichael says:

    Governor Stitt is an ass

  16. James Cain says:

The Choctaw Nation has strived to cooperate with the state in manners good for all Oklahomans. The tribes have struggled long and hard to attain the rights promised and granted by treaties, law and Supreme Court decisions. I would think that our state government would be proud of upholding Native rights and work together as a team for the collective good. I urge all state government to recognize the Choctaw and all Tribal nations as part of this fine government and work TOGETHER!

  17. Ivy says:

How In the world did he get re-elected, let alone the first time. This is the same person who had a problem with Sesame street. Seriously…. thank goodness he WILL not be re-elected for a third term. Gotta love the constitution
