Walt spent more than 60 years ranching in Bryan County after graduating from Texas A&M University in 1961 with a Masters Degree in Animal Husbandry. A lifelong learner, he never stopped working to better himself on all aspects of life. Walt was a published author of five books (two non-fiction and three fiction) as well as a longtime columnist for multiple publications. He served as a management consultant and public speaker for conferences and meetings across the ranching world. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Dixon Water Foundation, and provided leadership for numerous organizations including Holistic Management of Texas, HRM Oklahoma and the Oklahoma Land Stewardship Alliance.
Walt is survived by his two daughters, Colleen Smith, of Durant, Okla. and Quinn Maiocco of Hernando, Fla.; a grandson, Levi Ballard, of Edmond, Okla.; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Carolyn Crawford, of Katy, Texas, and Judy Byrd, of Sweetwater, Texas and other friends and family too numerous to count.
He was preceded in death by his beautiful bride and love of his life, Diann.
