Turnovers costly for Southeastern in loss at Oklahoma Baptist

SHAWNEE – Five turnovers would prove costly as Southeastern would give up 36 unanswered points to Oklahoma Baptist in a 36-3 loss on Saturday night in Shawnee, Okla.

The loss drops the Savage Storm to 0-3 to open the season with homecoming u next on the schedule when they host Northwestern Oklahoma State at 6 p.m. on Sept. 23 at Paul Laird Field.

Southeastern put up 162 yards combined through the air, with Weston Conaway leading that charge with 110 yards on 12-of-26 passing with two interceptions while suffering four sacks.

Bryce Fields would add 52 yards on 7-of-11 passing with a pick.

Duce Pittman was the top target for both quarterbacks as he hauled in six catches for 69 yards, while Gyasi Smith added four catches for 19 yards.

DJ Brown turned in a team-best 50 yards on the ground on 10 carries, while Smith added 11 on a carry and Nate Omayebu had eight on four totes.

Dylan Cox connected on his lone field goal try of the game, hitting from 40 yards out.

Calen High led the defense with eight tackles, while Jordan Hood recorded six stops.

SE would hold the Bison to a three-and-out on the game’s opening possession and answer by taking the ball 39 yards on nine plays on the ensuing drive before Cox connected on a 40-yard field goal to give the Storm an early 3-0 lead.

OBU would answer on its next drive with a 53-yard scoring drive that took six plays and 2:38 off the clock and give the home team a 7-3 lead which would remain the difference at the quarter break.

SE would see its luck take a sharp downward turn to open the second quarter as the first play resulted in an interception which set OBU up at the Storm 17-yard line.

OBU needed one play to score, and after a missed PAT would lead 13-3 early in the second quarter.

Southeastern’s next drive ended in a fumble at its own 30-yard line, setting up another Bison score which stretched the deficit to 20-3.

Misfortune continued to follow as a third-straight possession ended in turnover, this one an interception that was returned to the SE six-yard line, setting up OBU’s final score of the half, a 27-yard field goal to make the difference 23-3 which would be the mark at the halftime break.

Kaleb Whitley looked to spark the Storm with a 54-yard kick return to open the second half, setting SE up in OBU territory, but that drive would end in a punt and the Bison would take the next drive 87 yards on 14 plays for a touchdown, stretching its lead to 30-3.

Southeastern would see its next drive end in its fourth turnover of the night and a play later OBU would cash in with a 22-yard touchdown pass to extend the deficit to 36-3.

The first play of the next drive would be the fifth Sorm turnover of the contest, and OBU would hold possession into the fourth quarter before SE forced a turnover on downs with a goal line stand.

The teams would trade a pair of scoreless drives to end the contest and leave the final tally 36-3.
