Teenager drowns while swimming in Red River

WADE – A local teenager drowned on Sunday in the Red River.

Zachery Heil, 18, of Bennington, was a senior at Rock Creek High School.

According to a report from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Heil was attempting to swim across the Red River approximately 3 miles south of Wade at about 3:45 p.m. on Sunday. He became distressed, called for help, went under and did not resurface.

His body was recovered on Wednesday.

The incident was investigated by many troopers and the OHP was assisted by the OHP Dive Team, as well as the Philadelphia Fire Department, Wade Fire Department, Colbert Fire Department, Calera Fire Department, Bryan County Sheriff’s Office, Bryan County EMS  .
