BRYAN COUNTY – The Durant Kiwanis Club was honored to award Tammy Cross with its 2020 Kiwanis Citizen of the Year Award at its meeting last Wednesday. It was presented by Kiwanis Past President Darrell Mendez.
The Durant Citizen of the Year is an award that is given annually by the Durant Kiwanis Club. It recognizes an individual for his or her contributions to our community. This could be for something significant they did in one year, or for what they have consistently done for many years.
Past recipients include ministers, local politicians and city officials, educators, business owners, community volunteers and law enforcement personnel, to name a few. Some of the past Citizens of the Year are Kiwanians, which should not surprise us since we’re all about service, but many have not been.
For an individual to be considered for Durant Citizen of the Year, he or she must be nominated by a member of the club along with a brief summary of why that person is deserving of the award. All the nominations are reviewed by the past president’s committee and they select the award winner.
“Tammy is one of those local people that could be considered for this award every year,” Kiwanis President Jason Manous said. “She works tirelessly for our community in many areas.”
Tammy is active with the Durant Main Street, New Life House, Durant Area Chamber of Commerce, and many other organizations. She was also instrumental in the relocation of the Senior Citizen Center, now known as the Ron Cross Senior Center.
“Tammy is so deserving of this honor,” said Janet Reed, Executive Director of the Durant Area Chamber of Commerce. “She is very passionate about her community and is always willing to help if it is for the betterment of the community. What she does is from the heart.
“I can’t think of anyone more deserving of the honor. Thank you, Tammy, for the contribution you and your family have made to our community!”
