Choctaw Nation
DURANT – The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma will host a free public screening of the film “Powwow People” at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 14 at the District Cinema at the Choctaw Casino & Resort – Durant, 4216 S. Highway 69/75.
Seating for the family friendly event is on a first come, first served basis. Light refreshments will be available, and an information booth is available for the 2026 Choctaw PowWow in the fall.
Following the showing, director Sky Hopinka will conduct a Q&A with the audience. Hopinka is an award-winning visual artist and filmmaker who is a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation and a descendant of the Pechanga Band of Indians. Hopinka has been awarded a MacArthur Fellowship and a Guggenheim Fellowship among other honors.
The film’s executive producers include Sterlin Harjo, creator of the Oklahoma-made television series “Reservation Dogs” and “The Lowdown.”
The filmmakers state this is not a documentary of a powwow, but a powwow in cinematic form. Rather than entering as outside observers, the filmmakers organized the powwow itself, inviting dancers, singers, vendors, and community members to participate in the making of the film.
