Southeastern men pick up second league win at UAM

MONTICELLO, Ark. – Southeastern Oklahoma State trailed for most of the first half and would battle back-and-forth with Arkansas-Monticello in the final 20 minutes, with the Savage Storm  coming out on top 62-58 in the Steelman Fieldhouse.

SE (4-10, 2-6) finished the game shooting 47.1 percent (24-51) from the field and converted 35.3 percent (6-17) from the three-point line. The Storm and UAM tied in the battle at the glass with 31 boards each, and the blue and gold held a slight edge in the turnover battle 9-to-10.

The scoring was led by a pair of players, with Daniel Halldorsson recording 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting and Robert Briley registering 11 \ on 5-of-9 shooting. Ethan Wilkerson paced the side at the glass with eight rebounds and chipped in nine points, and Chandler Dickinson and Santiago Camacho Gomez combined for 13 points.

Southeastern and Arkansas-Monticello traded baskets to start the game, and the Storm would soon take a 10-7 lead behind layups from Halldrosson and Dj Dill. UAM began to heat up, building a 7-0 run over the next minute to grab its first advantage, but a triple by Elijah Hughey and a layup from Briley quickly erased the gap, tying it 20-all with 6:23 remaining in the half.

The Weevils continued to score in bunches, taking the lead again at 27-22 and stretched it moments later to 32-25 with the team’s fourth three-pointer of the half. SE would cut the host’s edge to 32-29 just before the break with a jumper by Dickinson and two made free throws from the hand of Wilkerson.

Arkansas-Monticello struck first to start the second half, extending its lead to 37-30 on the 5-0 run. The Storm replied with back-to-back three-pointers by Halldorsson and Wilkerson before Briley knocked down a layup to put the Storm back on top 43-40. Once again, the lead would flip to the host’s advantage as UAM went ahead 50-46.

SE took advantage of a two-and-a-half-minute scoreless run by the Weevils to regain the lead 51-50, capped off by a triple from Dickinson. The back-and-forth half continued, as the period saw the fourth lead change, with Arkansas-Monticello ahead 56-51.

Condiff tied the game 56-all with a three-pointer, and a layup by Briley kept the score knotted at 58-58. Moments later, Halldorsson gave the Storm the lead with a minute remaining, and Condiff would put the finishing touches on the game from the free-throw line for a 62-58 win.

Southeastern (4-10, 2-6) returns home next week for a meeting with Harding on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 7:30 p.m.
