The Patriot continues with the weekly feature, #ShopCalera, highlighting businesses around the Calera area. With construction starting soon that will disrupt the normal flow of traffic through the area and have other challenging effects on the town, it is important to keep our local businesses and organizations at the forefront of our minds and support our towns and county during this time and beyond.
Today’s featured business: Cherokee Communications. The Patriot spoke with Jenny Sanchez, president of Cherokee Communications, whose grandparents opened the company – one of Calera’s oldest – in 1959.
“We started as straight telecommunications,” Sanchez said. “When we started, it was party lines. My grandparents then replaced those and went to single lines.
“I guess the biggest change was in 1994 when we started serving DSL internet. They had dial-up before that, but we went to DSL in ’94.
“We’ve now gone to higher speeds and added television. Now we’re serving fiber to the homes and the businesses.”
The number of employees varies but is generally around 25. Sanchez invites the community to come by and check our what Cherokee Communications can do for their homes and businesses.
The main office is located at 403 N. Service Road in Calera and can be reached by phone at (580) 434-5375.
