Shirley Kay Barnes, of Durant, passed away peacefully on March 10, 2025, at the age of 73. Her journey began in Denison, Texas on January 8, 1952, as the cherished daughter of James William and Mary Ellen (Bunch) West.
Her heart found its match in Edward Lee Barnes, Sr., and together they built a life, allowing Shirley to be a stay-at-home mom. She dedicated her life to creating a nurturing home for her children. Later in life she loved visiting with family. She walked everywhere to see them, ensuring that the bonds of family remained strong. Her interests reflected her love for the simple pleasures in life. She enjoyed the thrill of playing Bingo and going to yard sales. Shirley also enjoyed watching heartwarming Hallmark movies.
Those left behind to carry on her legacy include her daughter Patricia Howe and husband Paul of Durant, sons Johnny West of Durant, Edward Barnes, Jr. and wife Dorcas of Cartwright, and son Ricky Barnes of Durant. Her grandchildren Cheyenne, Corey, Calvin, Steven, Kevin, Devin and wife Laken, and Johnny and wife Ava, along with great-grandchildren Patrick, Jasper, and Carter, will cherish the memories of their grandmother. She is also survived by her siblings James and wife Karla, Jerry and wife Sheila, Ronnie and wife Sherry, and Mary Ann Kelsay.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James William and Mary Ellen West; her husband, Edward Lee Barnes, Sr.; her grandson, Austin Barnes; her brothers, Gary and Ricky; and her grandparents, Jabe and Annie Bunch.
Her family will receive friends at her Family Hour from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, March 13, 2025, at the Holmes-Coffey-Murray Funeral Home. Her funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 14, 2025, at Holmes-Coffey-Murray Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Anthony Williams officiating. Shirley will be laid to rest in Cherry Mound Cemetery in Denison, Texas following her funeral service.
Those serving as pallbearers are Cheyenne Barnes, Calvin Howe, Steven Howe, Kevin Howe, Devin Howe, Johnny Howe, and Corey Barnes.
