The Ron Cross Senior Activity Center will host its first-ever Adopt-a-Senior tree this year. The tree will debut at a tree trimming ceremony at 10 a.m. on Monday, December 12. The center, which opened in June, hopes to make this an annual tradition.

Adopt-a-Senior is similar to the Angel Tree program, but contains requests from area seniors who may be in need. Shawna Robbins, the coordinator for the center, anticipates having 15 to 20 seniors participate. Requests will average around $20 each.

“Nourishing our elders shows the strength of our community,” Robbins said. “Christmas is the most beautiful time of the year and many senior citizens face the holiday without family.”

After the ceremony on Monday, those interested in adopting a senior can pick up a request at 1421 Chuckwa Drive.

Unwrapped gifts purchased for the program are due back to the center by Monday, December 19, but can be dropped off prior to the deadline. The center is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. every weekday. Once received, gifts will be wrapped and distributed to recipients.
