Polly Ann Johnson, 76, of Calera, Okla., went home to be with the Lord on April 4, 2021. She was born on March 28, 1945 to Tom Rion and Pauline Turnbull in Houston Texas.
She spent her childhood in Houston, then moved to Denison, Texas, as a teenager. She spent most of her life living between Houston and Denison before spending her final phase of life in Durant, Okla.
Polly (or Memaw as all her grandkids knew her) was proud of her family and had an extremely generous heart. She would always insist you take food home, when you came over to visit and would dig up her last dime from the bottom of her purse to help anyone who asked. Known by her long red hair, and outgoing personality, she made friends easily and everyone knew her.
After attending college, she developed a great love for nursing and caring for others, especially the elderly and disabled. She was our go-to family nurse to help if anyone ever got hurt.
Family was important to Polly. She wanted everyone to stay connected and loved hosting her large family at Christmas every year. She loved shopping and would save money all year long, to make sure she could buy everyone a gift at Christmas time.
She also had a special kind of love for her dog Fancy, her neighbor-friends Annie and Van, and her best friends in Houston, J.R. and Jeannie.
Polly endured pain all her life, but she didn’t let that stop her from helping others and sharing her life with her family. She was kind, funny, generous, and loving and although she will be greatly missed, we know she was ready to go home and be with her beloved Jamie and Misty Ann once again.
Polly was preceded in death by her parents, Tom Rion and Pauline Turnbull; brother, Thomas Cecil Steelman; sister, Bonnie Dolores Steelman; son, James Elrod Johnson; granddaughter, Misty Ann Johnson Gaskill; and great-grandson, Christian Paul Warren.
She is survived by her sons, Johnnie Johnson Jr and his wife Jacque and Joel Mabry his wife Debbie; grandchildren: Veronica Penrod, Jolene Warren, Johnnie Johnson III, Jacob Johnson, Hunter Mabry, and Makayla Ennis; and great-grandchildren: Mason, Star, Elijah, Jade, Noa, Gracie, Norah, and Kaden. She is also survived by Paul and Rhonda Creekmore and their children, Luke, and Lyndsey, who she loved as her own family.
Polly was laid to rest during a graveside service on Sunday, April 11 at the Kemp Cemetery in Kemp, Oklahoma.
Arrangements under the care of Cunningham Funeral Home.
