DURANT – Due to the ongoing safety concerns surrounding COVID-19, Southeastern Oklahoma State University has made the decision to not hold traditional homecoming activities on October 23-24.
“This was a very difficult decision, but the health and safety of our campus community, alumni, and visitors was the top priority,’’ said Southeastern president Thomas Newsom. “Representatives from the University, the Alumni Association and the Student Government Association are exploring other ways to engage alumni, students, and the University community.’’
Both the Alumni Association and SGA have been very supportive of this decision, with alumni president Andrea Rogers Mersiovsky releasing the following statement:
“In effort to keep our alumni, students and supporters safe, the Southeastern Alumni Association fully supports the efforts and decisions made by the leadership of the University regarding Homecoming 2020. Even though in-person celebrations are not possible at this time, we encourage each of you to take the time to reach out to your classmates, former faculty/staff, Greek sisters/brothers, etc., in order to reconnect. Whether in-person or virtual, Southeastern Homecoming is a time we all cherish and look forward to each year.”
Anna Antuono, president of the Student Government Association, offered similar thoughts.
“The Student Government Association agrees that the health and safety of our students is paramount and feels this is a necessary adjustment,” Antuono said. “We are working with the University and Alumni Association in order to create opportunities for students to network with our alumni, share memories from past and present, and connect with our campus community. We look forward to celebrating our University’s students and alumni at our Homecoming Week in 2021!’’
The Alumni Office will provide updates once any activities or events are scheduled.
