Mary Beth Smith Underwood

Mary Beth Smith Underwood was born September 11, 1951, in Ada, Okla., to Elmer Harty Smith and Ruby Mae Large Smith. She went into the sweet arms of her savior on Monday, November 21, 2022, at the age of 71.

Mary Beth married the love of her life on June 26, 1969, in Durant, Okla. They have three sons: Michael, Gregg, and Robert. They also adopted and raised two grandchildren as their own: Michael Dale and Michelle. Mary Beth graduated from Durant High School. After getting her boys into elementary school, she earned her degree from Southeastern Oklahoma State University. She was still working as an aide to the special education department at Durant High School at the time of her passing.

Mary Beth was a faithful member of the South 14th St. Church of Christ. Her faith in God helped her through the many trials she faced in this life. She often said that all she could do was to pray about those things she could not control. Her example of kindness, faith, selflessness, and love was an example to all those that knew and loved her.

Mary Beth’s favorite holiday was Christmas. She loved everything about the season but especially loved decorating her home with lights, trees, and Santa’s. She did her best to make Christmas as special as she could for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She always made her kids and grandkids their favorite pie for their Christmas dinner. She also loved making fudge and for many, many years has made fudge for family, friends, and neighbors.

Mary Beth was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Mark; and her nephew, Nathan Smith.

She is survived by her husband, Jimmy Underwood; children, Michael Underwood of Durant, Okla., Gregg Underwood of Calera, Okla., Robert Underwood of Durant, Okla., Michael Dale Underwood and Tink of Austin, Texas, Michelle Underwood of Durant, Okla.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, J.R. Smith and wife Elizabeth of Mustang, Okla.; one sister, Koleen Gibbins and husband Terry of Wylie, Texas; many nieces, nephews, extended family, friends, and brothers and sisters in Christ.

She was loved by many and will be greatly missed by all those that knew her.

A memorial service will be held at the Brown Funeral Home Chapel in Durant, Okla., at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 3, 2022.
