Judy Mitchell

Ruby “Judy” Mitchell, a loving and generous woman known for her friendly demeanor, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2023, in Calera, Okla. Born on January 4, 1934, in Headrick, Okla., she lived a life full of love, laughter, and devotion to her family and community.

Throughout her life, Judy was a dedicated homemaker who also held various jobs that showcased her industrious spirit. She started her professional journey at Levi’s in Bonham, TX, before moving on to Johnson & Johnson and then to the Dress Factory in Durant. Judy also served her community by cooking for the Utica schools and delivering flowers for Wilson Ross during holidays. Her commitment to civic duty was further highlighted by her volunteer work for the Bryan County Election Board.

Judy’s affiliations extended beyond her work, as she was a proud member of the Bryan County Extension. Her spirit of service and her love for her community were evident in all her endeavors. She was a woman who believed in the power of active citizenship and made her contributions felt in every aspect of her life. Judy’s interests were as varied as they were vibrant. She also held a deep love for travel.

In her 89 years, Judy was a beacon of kindness and generosity. Her friendly nature endeared her to everyone she met, creating a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. She approached life with a sense of joy and a spirit of giving that touched everyone she knew. Her legacy is one of love and service, and she will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Judy was the cherished matriarch of a large and loving family. She is survived by her daughters, Terri Towne of Colbert, Okla.; Pat Jones and husband Don of Apple, Okla.; and Tina Cross and husband James of Calera, Okla.. She was also the proud grandmother of Steve Jones of Hartshorne, Okla.; Elgin Cross and wife Angie of Bennington, Okla.; Seth Towne and wife Misty of Calera, Okla.; Kara Askins of Euless, Texas; Kalyn Herden and husband Bryce of Coleman, Okla.; and Brandi St. Clair and husband John of Calera, Okla. Judy’s legacy also includes 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She leaves behind her brother, Gene Pruitt and his wife Ruth. Judy was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey and Mattie Pruitt; husband, Marron York Mitchell; son, Gary Wayne Mitchell; granddaughter, Lori Jones Clunn; granddaughter, Misty Heath; great-grandson, Grayson Clunn; brothers, Newton Pruitt and Columbus Pruitt; and sisters, Agnes Calderon, Dovie Dodd, and Dorthy Pruitt.

Family hour will be Wednesday, October 18, 2023 from 5-7 p.m. at Holmes-Coffey-Murray Funeral Home for those that wish to visit with her family.

Her funeral service will be at Calvary Baptist Church at 2 p.m. on Thursday, October 19, 2023. with Brother Darel Bunch officiating. She will be laid to rest at Highland Cemetery following her funeral service.
