Jim Sherrill

James “Jim” Edward Sherrill, a resident of Durant, Okla., passed away on December 7, 2023. He was born on November 3, 1942, in California to Roscoe McCalib and Lucy Lee (Brooks) Sherrill.

Jim graduated high school in 1960 from Dumas High School in Dumas, Texas. He later attended Southeastern Oklahoma State University where he was majoring in English before he enlisted in the Marine Corps.

Jim was an avid reader, enjoyed writing, and had a love of literature. He enjoyed team roping and all things “cowboy.” He did everything from working cattle, hauling cattle, to getting on horses that no one else would ride. He also enjoyed bowling with friends and his brother, Jerry. Later in life, Jim became a fervent tennis fan, and watched every match he possibly could on the tennis channel.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Roscoe and Lucy Sherrill; his brother Jerry Sherrill; and great nephew Colton Sherrill.

He is survived by his two children: Kelly Brooks Sherrill and Jeremy Summers Sherrill. Jim is also survived by his sister-in-law, Carol Sherrill of Durant, Okla.; nephew Trace Sherrill and wife Dena of Durant, Okla.; niece Page Parker and husband Richard of Durant, Okla.; and great nieces and nephew Hannah and Cole Parker of Durant, Okla.; and Ashley Armstrong and husband Zach of Oklahoma City, Okla. Jim is also survived by wonderful friends and caregivers: Jean Ann Bacon, Keith Bacon, and Brenda Whittington all of Durant, Okla.

Funeral services will be held December 16, 2023, at 2 pm at Brown’s Funeral Home in Durant, Okla., with Trace Sherrill officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery in Durant, Okla. Serving as pallbearers will be Tucker Johnson, Jerry Hughes, Steve Buckaloo, Keith Bacon, Trace Sherrill, and Richard Parker. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Jim Adair and Benny Holt.

Services will be under the direction of Brown’s Funeral Home of Durant, Okla.
