James Granger

James Granger of Durant, Oklahoma passed away on Thursday, Oct. 21, 2021, in Durant at the age of 89. James was born on June 9, 1932, in Atoka, Okla. to William and Lela (Hight) Granger.

James attended school in Atoka. After the death of his father, James quit school to support his mother and siblings. He later married Hazel LaRue (Prater) on July 16, 1955, in Durant. They were united together as one for 65-plus years until Hazel’s passing on April 6, 2021.

James proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War until his Honorable Discharge. James worked for Evergreen Feed Company for 25 years until his retirement. He and LaRue were loyal and dedicated members of Calvary Baptist Church and he enjoyed camping and fishing. He was a master wood worker and he loved being a cowboy. Most of all he loved his family and friends.

James is preceded in death by his wife, Hazel LaRue Granger; son, James Gary Granger; parents, William and Lela Granger; brothers, William “Bill” and Dale Granger and half-sisters, Lovina Blackburn and Lucille Wise.

Loved ones left behind to carry on James’s legacy are his children: Vickie Ward and husband Keith, Pam Lindsey and husband Richard, James Granger Jr. and wife Tina and Bart Granger and wife Annette; grandchildren: Kelly Ward, Chris Ward, Stefanie Morgan and husband Chris, Todd Lindsey, Corey Granger, Lauren Martin and husband Mitch, Ashley Granger and Abbigail Mitchell and husband Coy; brother, Arthur Granger and wife Louise and a host of great-grandchildren, extended family, and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, 2021, at Brown’s Funeral Service Chapel. Bro. Darel Bunch will officiate. Interment will follow in Highland Cemetery with Coy Mitchell, Corey Granger, Tyler Francis, Todd Lindsey, Keith Ward and Chris Ward serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be David Blackburn, Arthur Granger, Fred Marlow, Fred Booth, Greg Corbin, and Richard Lindsey.

The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home on Friday, Oct. 29 from 6-8 p.m.

Arrangements are under the direction of Brown’s Durant Funeral and Cremation Service.
