CARTWRIGHT – A man drowned in the Red River on Sunday afternoon while trying to save a young girl.
A 10-year-old girl from Denver was wading in the Red River when she was swept away by the current, according to a report from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. Antonio Salazar-Galicia, 36 of Denison, Texas attempted to save her. He reached but was pushed under the water and did not resurface.
The girl was rescued by a nearby boat and revived by bystanders before being transported to Texoma Medical Center.
The body of Salazar-Galacia was recovered by the Cartwright Fire Department about an hour and a half later using the drag bar.
Personal floatation devices were not in use by either victim, according to the report.
The OHP was assisted by the Cartwright Fire Department, Colbert Fire Department, Grayson County Sheriff’s Department, the Corps of Engineers and the Colbert EMS.
