Double fatality accident just north of Durant

BRYAN COUNTY – Two people were killed in a two-vehicle accident north of Durant on U.S. Highways 69/75 as the Memorial Day Weekend was just getting underway.

Quentin Brooks, 25 of Overland Park, Kan., was driving a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu southbound on 69/75 on the outside lane at approximately 9 a.m. on Saturday when his vehicle struck from behind a 2006 Kenworth semi, which was also in the outside lane, and overturned into the median, according to a report from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

Passengers Jamesha Brooks, 25 of Overland Park, Kan., and Maurtica Britt, 25 of Kansas City, Kan., were pronounced dead at the scene and were transported to Gordon’s Funeral Home in Durant.

A 5-year-old passenger was transported by Air Evac to Dallas Children’s Hospital and admitted in stable condition with head and arm injuries. A 3-year-old passenger was transported by EMS to Texoma Medical Center in Denison and admitted in stable condition with internal trunk injuries.

Quentin Brooks refused treatment at the scene for trunk internal and arm injuries.

The driver of the semi, Danishjo Abdul, 28 of Allen, Texas, was not injured.

The cause of the collision of was inattentive driving, according to the report. A toxicology report is pending.

The invention by the OHP was assisted by the Durant Police Department, Bryan County EMS, and Durant Fire Department.
