DURANT – A message from the Durant ISD superintendent Duane Meredith went out to parents and families of the district’s students Friday evening to inform them of the school’s plans for the coming weeks.
Meredith stated in the message that although there are concerns of increased COVID-19 numbers across the state, “Durant ISD numbers are significantly lower with a rate of active positive cases at less than 1 percent of our school population.”
The district will continue to monitor the situation in upcoming weeks.

“The following is important information regarding Covid-19 numbers. At this time, it is the intent of Durant Schools to continue providing face-to-face instruction for our students and utilizing the safety protocols we have in place for as long as possible. We understand there are concerns around the increase of cases in Bryan County and the state of Oklahoma.
“However, Durant ISD numbers are significantly lower, with a rate of active positive cases at less than 1% of our school population. We believe our protocols for distancing, sanitation and the district mask mandate have helped slow the spread and protect our schools. Staying in school provides a safe environment for our students and prevents social gatherings of students out in the community. In the end, staying in school positively impacts students’ social and emotional well-being, as well as their academic success.
“Over the next few weeks, we expect percentages to continue to change. As a district, we will closely monitor numbers to determine what is in the best interest of our students, staff and community. It would be our recommendation that parents be proactive in planning for alternate child care if needed. Please be advised that at any time, we may need to move to distance learning without substantial warning, but will notify parents as soon as possible. Continue watching for official posts and notifications from Durant Schools.
“The level of cooperation from our community to help keep our school family safe and doors open is unparalleled. As always, we appreciate your continued support of our teachers, staff, and district. Thank you & have a good weekend.”
