Release
The City of Durant posted a release following its regular meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2026. At that meeting, the Durant City Council unanimously approved an ordinance amending the Durant City Code of Ordinances relating to detention centers within city limits.
The ordinance requires any entity seeking to own or operate a detention center in Durant to obtain a Conditional Use Permit, as well as approval through the City’s planning and zoning process. The ordinance also establishes penalties and declares an emergency, making the requirements effective immediately.
Under this ordinance, no detention center may open within the City without first receiving proper permitting and approval from the Planning and Zoning Commission and the Durant City Council. The measure also places restrictions on entities seeking to establish detention centers in Durant.
Most importantly, this ordinance ensures that the City of Durant and its citizens have a voice in decisions regarding whether a detention center may locate within in city limits.
The City remains committed to transparency, public involvement and protecting the interests of our community.
