DURANT – A total solar eclipse will cross Choctaw Country in April, bringing thousands to a rare celestial event where viewers can see afternoon skies darken and an illuminated halo appear. The eclipse on April 8 promises to be an exciting event, with its path cutting across southeastern Oklahoma.
The Chahta Vlheha (Choctaw People) have many unique and rich oral traditions which go back generations. The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma (CNO) is celebrating this rare event in several locations across Choctaw Country.
Choctaw Country, located in southeastern Oklahoma, is fortunate to be in the direct path of this celestial event. CNO recognizes the significance of this rare occurrence and is organizing various activities and events, allowing visitors the chance to witness the eclipse in a safe and educational environment.
Choctaw Cultural Center Event
- The Choctaw Cultural Center will observe the 2024 Solar Eclipse on Monday, April 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with fun and educational activities including the story of Fvni Lusa, the Black Squirrel (see video below) who caused the eclipse.
- 300 tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Admission for center membership holders is $30 each. General admission tickets are $40 each. Visitors can purchase tickets.
- Visitors will receive a 2024 Solar Eclipse T-shirt, noise-making clapper, and protective glasses.
Wheelock Academy Historic Site Event (SOLD OUT)
- Wheelock Academy Historic Site, 1733 Wheelock Rd., Millerton, will observe the 2024 Solar Eclipse on Monday, April 8, from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m.
- Visitors will receive 2024 Solar Eclipse protective eyewear and a lanyard with a commemorative badge sporting the Fvni Lusa logo.
- Activities will include the story of Fvni Lusa, the Black Squirrel (see video below), told by Dawn Standridge, Cultural Research Associate. Visitors can join in cultural demonstrations such as beadwork, Choctaw games, tours of museum and historical site, and food vendors.
