Carrol Ammons

Carrol Wayne Ammons of Durant, Okla. passed from this life on Wednesday, April 26, 2023 at the age of 82. He was born on Sunday, September 15, 1940 in Caddo, Okla., Mack and Lola Mae (Price) Ammons.

He was a longtime resident of Durant, but formally of Caddo. He always appeared to be happy and was of the Baptist faith. He married Cleta Jo (Crossland) Ammons on June 20, 1964 in Caney, Okla.

He worked for Brown and Root in Houston, Texas for 16 years, before he started his home construction business. He also helped oversee the electrical construction of the power plant in Valliant, Okla. In addition, he was one of the first homebuilders of The Woodlands, Texas, prior to its expansion.

On June 16, 1991, he received a kidney transplant. He was known as one of the longest recipients in Oklahoma of a kidney transplant of 31 years.

He had a passion of bargains and could be spotted at Lowe’s daily. He could also be spotted daily at the Post Office. He enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren playing sports.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Mack and Lola Mae (Price) Ammons; siblings, Roxie Parks, Lee Roy Ammons, J.C., Dorothy Parker, Dockie, and Susie Cates.

Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years Cleta Jo (Crossland) Ammons; children, Courtney Ammons Freese of Durant, Okla., Cary Ammons of Talihina, Okla.; grandchildren: Chaney Freese, Cady Ammons, Cy Ammons, Case Ammons; siblings Syble Franklin, Maxine Franklin, Mack “Jr.” Ammons, Bill Ammons as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends.

A family visitation will be held from 3-5 p.m. on Sunday, April 30, 2023 at Gordon Funeral Home in Durant, Oklahoma.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 1, 2023 at Gethsemane Cemetery in Caddo, Okla., with Dr. Greg Ammons officiating. The nephews will serve as pallbearers.
