DURANT – “Aiimvlhpesa Shali / Carriers of Culture: Honoring Generations of Choctaw Artistry,” an exhibition featuring works by 13 experienced tribal artists, is in its final month on display at the Choctaw Cultural Center. It runs through Oct. 16, and can be viewed Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The artists, all tribal elders, represent each of the 12 districts of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, and one from outside the reservation of southeast Oklahoma. The exhibition offers paintings, pottery, textiles, and works in cane, glass, silver, and wood in both traditional and contemporary styles.
“Carriers of Culture” highlights the enduring power of art as a vessel for tradition, identity, and community. Each work reflects the responsibility and pride of carrying culture forward,” said Monique Jacobsohn, curator of the show.
Also, Jacobsohn will present a Curator Talk discussing the artists and their art on Friday, Oct. 16 at 11 a.m.
This unique show can be seen in the Artist Spotlight Hallway at the Choctaw Cultural Center, 1919 Hina Hanta Way, in Durant.
