Carey Zegart

Coach Carey Martin Zegart of Sand Springs, Okla. passed from this life on Sunday, Feb. 20, 2022 at the age of 61. He was born on August 29, 1960 in Louisville, Ky. to Arnold J. Zegart and Debbie (Kasdan) Zegart Straight.

Carey loved to travel and lived in several places over his lifetime following coaching placements from Kentucky to Florida and Texas to Oklahoma. He was a resident of Sand Springs, Okla. for the past 10 years. He married Darla Kaye (Satterfield) Zegart on August 29, 2011 in Cleburne, Texas.

He enjoyed basketball and being a college basketball coach. His favorite team being Big Blue Nation – University of Kentucky. He loved his nephew Corey and never wanted to miss a basketball or soccer game as he grew up. He was often on the sidelines of his grandsons’ soccer games cheering and sideline coaching them as well. One of Carey’s greatest accomplishments was that he brought joy to wherever he went. He loved to make people laugh and didn’t mind being silly to bring about a smile or giggle. He loved weightlifting and holds a state record in Oklahoma. He also loved Tai food and Star Trek. He was a huge animal lover and treated his dogs, Coco, Belle and Shelbie, like his children. Wherever there were animals or children, Carey could be found. He was always a child at heart.

He founded Zegart Studios in Sand Springs with his wife and while he was not an artist himself he loved to admire the work of others and encourage young people to find their creativity in a safe place. Carey gave his heart to Christ and was active in the community leading out in Bible studies at his and his wife’s art studio. He would pray and mentor individuals whether they were long time friends or simply people that walked into the studio off the street. He was a lot of things to a lot of people – a coach, a husband, a son, a brother, a dad, and a grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Debbie (Kasdan) Zegart Straight.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Darla (Satterfield) Zegart of Sand Springs, Okla.; father, Arnold Zegart and wife Carol of Louisville, Ky.; sister, Mindy Turba and husband Carl of Lutz, Fla.; daughter, Amanda Pilgrim and husband Michael of Broken Arrow, Okla.; grandchildren: Jason, Hunter, and Alexander Pilgrim of Broken Arrow, Okla.; niece, Brittany Turba-Bulone and husband Philip Bulone of Tampa, Fla.; nephew, Corey Turba of Lutz, Fla. and a multitude of friends and family.
