Calera man transported by Air Evac from single-vehicle accident

CALERA – One man was injured when his vehicle went off the road early Monday morning a mile west of Calera.

Hunter Burkhalter, 23 of Calera, was driving a 2011 GMC Sierra pickup southbound on Kirsey Road, and failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Kirsey Road and Smiser Road at around 12:40 a.m., according to a report from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. The pickup crossed Smiser Road departing the roadway striking a large tree, overturning on its side in a large creek.

Burkhalter was pinned in the vehicle for approximately an hour and 15 minutes and was extricated by Durant Fire Department, and Calera Fire Department using Hurst equipment. He was transported by Air Evac to Medical City of Plano and admitted in stable condition with head, trunk, arm, and leg injuries.

The vehicle was traveling at an unsafe speed and there was an odor of alcohol at the scene, according to the report.

The airbags were equipped and deployed, but Burkhalter was not wearing a seat belt.

The OHP was assisted in the investigation by the Bryan County Sheriff’s Office, Bryan County EMS, Durant Fire Department, Calera Fire Department, and Air Evac.
