DURANT – The first Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma (CNO) Stickball Tournament of the season saw a team representing Mississippi as the winning men’s team and a team mostly comprised of Oklahoma Choctaws, as the winning women’s team.
The Weekend Choctaws and Intertribal took home the men’s and women’s titles, respectively, on June 11 on the Competition Stickball Field at the Choctaw Cultural Center in Calera.
About 200 players on 14 teams from Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi took the field from 9 a.m. to dusk to determine the winners.
A crowd estimated at more than 500 witnessed Weekend Choctaws post an 8-1 win over Oklahoma Chickasaw in the men’s finals.
Intertribal got past Oklasippi, a team made up of both Oklahoma and Mississippi Choctaws, 2-1.
The tournament named the Most Valuable Players, Cameron Shoemake, a member of Weekend Choctaws, and Clarissa Frazier of Intertribal.
Future stickball tournaments and games will be announced on Choctaw social media channels.
