Betty Jean Bishop passed away at the age of 76, on Wednesday, April 21, 2021. She ended her battle with dementia at home surrounded by her family.
Betty was born on May 2, 1944 in Blue, Okla., to Guy Walker and Lorene (Slagle) Carey. She graduated from Blue High School and married Tommy Bishop on Feb. 10, 1963. They moved to Dallas and spent 20 years there, until returning to Durant. Betty and Tommy were co-owners of Discount Carpets until their retirement.
Betty’s love in life was her family. Her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren meant the world to her. Betty was of the Methodist faith and she enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren, catalog shopping and doing laundry.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; brother, “Son” Carey and (Oneta); sister, Geneva Carey; brother, Gary Carey; brother, “Tubby” Carey and sister-in-law, Linda Crawford and her in-laws, Earl and Joy Thomison.
Betty is survived by her husband of 58 years, Tommy Bishop of the home; son, Danny Bishop (LeAnn); daughter, Karen Bishop (Gwenn); granddaughters: Amy Bishop and Ashley Bishop; grandson, T.J. Bishop (Alicia); great-grandson, LeLand Bishop; great-granddaughter, Ella Bishop; brothers: James Carey (Mary Ruth), Paul Carey (Mary) and John Carey (Kathi) and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
The family of Betty Bishop wishes to thank her full time caregiver, Ruth Sutterfield for her devotion and constant care, making it possible for her to remain at home in the comfort of her family during the final years of her life.
A celebration of life will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Apr. 24, 2021 at Brown’s Funeral Home.
