Alvin “Buck” Buchanan passed away peacefully on April 7, 2025, in Durant, Oklahoma, at the age of 91. He was born on October 21, 1933, to Eston and Avis Mernervey (Smith) Buchanan. On June 10, 1954, Buch married the love of his life, Lena (Beal) Robertson, in Durant, Oklahoma.
Buck began working for the Corp of Engineers at the age of 17, showing strong work ethic that would continue throughout his life. He later worked as a heavy equipment operator for the Durant Street Department, becoming skilled at running a bulldozer and road grader. After 64 years of dedicated service, he retired, leaving behind a legacy of commitment and hard work. Outside of work, Buck enjoyed going to the American Legion and connecting with friends. In his retirement, he enjoyed raising, buying and selling cattle. Buck was also a member of the Pentecostal faith and took pride in reading his Bible.
Buck is survived by his son, Rickey Lynn Buchanan of Durant; daughter, Avis Louise Buchanan of Durant; grandsons, Rickey Shawn Buchanan of Durant; Moe and his wife Veda Christian of Norman, Oklahoma; granddaughter, Paula Dillingham and her husband Don of Edmond, Oklahoma; granddaughter, Elizabeth McIver and husband Roger of Altus, Oklahoma; sisters, Joyce Buchanan Cleveland of Durant; Marie Ricks and her husband J. R. of McAlester, Oklahoma; great-grandson Shawn Cole Buchanan of Durant; great granddaughters, Alexus Buchanan of Durant, Kalee Beth Buchanan of Durant; Sarah Polson of Calera, Oklahoma; step grandchildren Billy Barnes of Oklahoma, Gary Barnes of Oklahoma, Kenneth Barnes of Oklahoma, Anna Hare of Texas, Phyllis Barnes of Texas, Susie Barnes of Oklahoma, Melissa Wilson of Oklahoma, Rebecca Wilson of Texas, Gloria Robertson of Texas, and Jackie Robertson of Texas; nephews Kenneth Powell of Ardmore, Oklahoma; Jerry Buchanan of Silo, Oklahoma; Randy Rochelle of Durant, Oklahoma; Stanley Buchanan of Coalgate, Oklahoma; Terry Waitman of Oklahoma City; Gray Buchanan of Durant, Oklahoma; Ervin McCarty of Durant; Bill McCarty of Durant; Kirvin McCarty of Durant; nieces are Clara Baker of Durant; Charlotte Waitman of Bonham, Texas; Mary McCalib of Durant; Jerrie Hankins of Durant.
Preceding him in death are his parents, Eston and Avis Buchanan, his beloved wife, Lena Buchanan, his sons Alvin Lynn Buchanan, his granddaughter Misty Lynn Polson, and grandson Johnny Lynn Christian, his brothers Charles David Buchanan, Robert Lee Buchanan, Eston Buchanan, Jr. “Big Red”, Clarence Buchanan, Edgar Buchanan “Little Red”, and Albert David Buchanan, as well as his sisters Lois Buchanan Waitman, Jolene Buchanan Rochelle, Dessie Mae Buchanan McCarty, Gladys Buchanan Williams, and Edna Buchanan Taylor. Buck is also preceded in death by four stepchildren whom he raised with all the love of a father: Billy Joe Robertson, Donnie Houston Robertson, Dorothy Carol Robertson Barnes, and Linda Sue Robertson Christian. Also preceding him in death are his nephews Robert Eston (Bobby) Buchanan; Michael Ralph Buchanan; Ralph Buchanan; Donald Buchanan, and Larry Buchanan, and nieces Rhonda (Rochelle) Estep; and Carrie Arnold.
Family Hour will be Thursday, April 10, 2025, from 7-8 p.m., at the Holmes-Coffey-Murray Funeral Home. His funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, April 11, 2025, in the Holmes-Coffey-Murray Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Anthony Williams officiating. Buck will be laid to rest in Highland Cemetery following his funeral service.
Pallbearers will be Randy Rochelle, Bubby Hart, Nathan Hart, Gary Buchanan, Ryan Rice, and Justin Boone.
