DURANT – In recognition of Red Ribbon Week, Choctaw Nation Behavioral Health is inviting community members, organizations and local leaders to join a growing Drug-Free Coalition (DFC) focused on preventing substance misuse and strengthening communities throughout the region.
The coalition was established to unite community partners who share a commitment to reducing substance use and improving the health and well-being of local families. The effort also positions the coalition to pursue future funding opportunities, including a Drug-Free Communities grant in 2027, which requires an established community coalition.
The coalition is currently led by Choctaw Nation Behavioral Health staff and includes representatives from several Choctaw Nation programs, including Tribal Opioid Response (TOR), Recovery In Progress (RIP), TVSSA, Public Health and AWARE. Community partners currently involved include CREOKS, Circle of Care, Quinton Public Schools, Kiowa Public Schools and the Oklahoma Attorney General’s Office Opioid Abatement Program.
“Creating lasting change takes the involvement of the entire community,” said Holly Baker, coalition champion. “We are bringing together people and organizations who care about prevention, youth development and healthy communities. The more voices we have at the table, the stronger our impact will be.”
The coalition is seeking additional members from the following sectors:
Community involvement is a critical component of successful prevention efforts. By partnering across sectors, coalition members can identify local challenges, share resources, develop prevention strategies and create opportunities that support drug-free lifestyles for youth and families.
The coalition meets virtually on the third Thursday of each month at 9 a.m., making participation accessible for members throughout the service area.
Individuals interested in learning more or joining the coalition are encouraged to contact Baker with Choctaw Nation Behavioral Health. The coalition welcomes anyone who is passionate about substance use prevention and helping build safer, healthier communities.
