Storm roll past UAM in straight sets

DURANT – Southeastern picked up its second sweep in consecutive days, rolling past Arkansas-Monticello in straight sets, 3-0.

The Savage Storm was read hot over three sets, attacking at a .480 clip with 55 kills to just six errors. SE had three players in double-figure kills, led by Rylee Jackson with 14 on a .448 attack percentage. Gabby Jones hit over .300 in the match with 11 kills, while Nykeriah Allen slammed down 11 on a .563 clip.

Setting the attack, Jasmin Dion passed around 44 assists and had seven kills and six digs. Patience Lewis racked up 20 digs to lead the Storm, while Sophee Dean and Anger Ngeth posted 2.0 blocks each.

SET ONE
The Storm were off to a quick start, taking a 5-2 lead, which soon grew to 11-3 behind a 6-0 run featuring four straight kills by Jackson. The sophomore outside hitter remained the hot hand, slamming down two more kills before SE ripped off a 3-0 burst to push the gap to 18-8. Southeastern continued to score in pairs, taking a 21-11 lead and a 24-13 lead before Jackson hammered down the final kill, 25-14.

SET TWO
Southeastern wasted no time at the start of set two, racing ahead to a 7-0 advantage behind three Dean kills. The Storm began to spread the ball around, with four different players combining for the next five kills, as the blue and gold’s gap grew to 17-8. From there, the two sides traded points before SE chained a 3-0 run together to set up the final point, which came on a kill by Jones to win the set 25-14.

SET THREE
It was the Weevils turn to start fast, as they led through the first rallies of the third frame 5-3. However, the Storm quickly got going again and tied the set at 5-all and later 10-all. SE eventually broke the deadlock with a 5-0 run featuring three kills by Jones to push ahead 15-11. Southeastern began to take control from there, rattling off three straight points to grow the advantage to 19-14. The Storm remained in front for the rest of the set, outscoring UAM 5-2 to close out the frame, 25-19.

Southeastern (9-9, 4-3 GAC) heads to Arkansas for the first time this season for a pair of road matches in Arkadelphia, Ark., beginning with Henderson State on Thursday, Oct. 8 at 6 p.m.
