Don Skaggs

Don B. Skaggs, a devoted father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 8, 2024, at the age of 85. Born on August 21, 1939 in Durant, Okla., Don lived a life filled with love, kindness, and a deep appreciation for the people that surrounded him.

Don spent 30 years working in the grocery business, where his bigger than life personality and hard work left a lasting impression on coworkers and the many customers he came to know. He was known for his friendly demeanor and unique ability to connect with everyone he met – Don truly never met a stranger.

Some of Don’s greatest joys were his lifelong obsession with basketball (he was a star player on the Durant High School team), horse racing and slot machines. Whether he was hustling up a pick-up game of 5-on-5 at the rec center, cheering on his favorite horse at the track, or enjoying a day at the 8-liners, he found excitement and happiness in the thrill of the game. All were passions he loved to share with family and friends.

Family was at the center of Don’s life. He was preceded in death by his father, Henry Skaggs; mother, Beatryce Hart; brothers, Hank, Cletis and Kenneth Skaggs; and sister, LaQuita Sexton.

He is survived by his sister, Marketa Mitchell; ex-wife and dear friend, Jo Mason; girlfriend and companion, Patricia Eddy; three daughters: Tamra Harris (Chuck), Ginger White (John Wilson), and Brandi Lewis (Scott); seven grandchildren: Cadin White (Gabrielle); Ryan and Regan Harris; Shelby, Brandon and Bridget Lewis, and LaNyjiah Clayton; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. To his family, he was a bottomless source of love, compassion, and laughter; always ready with a kind word, a funny story or a well-used joke.

A celebration of Don’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 14, at the Gordon Event Center in Durant, Okla.

Don/Daddy/Papa will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His big smile, zest for life, and love of good times will be remembered and cherished forever.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Gordon Funeral Home, 221 N. Third Ave. in Durant.
