Shirlene Lilley Hughes, formerly of Durant, passed away peacefully in her home on November 16, 2023, in Lubbock, Texas. Born on October 30, 1961, in Durant, Oklahoma, to Hubert and Eula Faye (Mattingly) Lilley. Shirlene was a faith-filled woman who touched many lives with her vibrant personality and unwavering dedication.
Shirlene was a beloved wife, mother, and sister. She is survived by her loving husband, Mark Hughes, and their daughter, Kali Faye Hughes, both of Lubbock, Texas. She also leaves behind her sister, Darla Edgemon, and her husband Ron, of Norman, Oklahoma, along with numerous cherished cousins. Shirlene was preceded in death by her parents, Hubert and Eula Faye Lilley, and her brother, Gary Lilley.
Shirlene was a talented and dedicated basketball player for Durant High School and Southeastern Oklahoma State University, receiving numerous postseason honors including All State at DHS and Kiamichi All Star. After receiving her bachelor’s degree, Shirlene dedicated her professional life to health education and coaching. She was Head Coach for the girls basketball team in Friona, Texas, a Class 2A school, for three seasons from the 1990-91 season through the 1992-93 season. Her record during that time was 84-25 and reaching the playoffs in all three seasons, including two Region 1 Finals. Shirlene later became the Head Coach for the girls basketball team at Lubbock Coronado High School in Lubbock, Texas, a Class 5A school, for 19 seasons. Her record there was 437-136 from 1993-94 through the 2011-12 seasons, reaching playoffs for 17 seasons, including nine regional tournaments and five regional finals. Her love for coaching was evident in her overall coaching record of 521-161 and her active involvement with the Texas High School Coaches Association and the Texas Girls High School Association. Shirlene’s passion for her work was only surpassed by her commitment to her faith. She was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church in Lubbock, Texas.
Shirlene’s life was a testament to her spirit, passion, and faith. Her legacy will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know her. She will be deeply missed, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of her loved ones.
Her funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at Calvary Baptist Church with Chaplain John Hill (Coach Hill) officiating. Shirlene will be laid to rest at Highland Cemetery following her funeral service.
