It may be June, but it is not too early to start getting things ready for the 2017-2018 school year. And in this case, helping others to get ready.
The Bryan County Turning Point Coalition is hosting the Back 2 School Bash this summer and the Fill The Bus is the kickoff event.
Emily Brittingham, who oversees Public Relations for the City of Durant, talked about the fact that the group is doing the Fill The Bus a little different this year.
“It is an interactive drive we’re going to do this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m,” Brittingham said. “In the past, Big Five has put their bus out there and requested donations, but this time we’re going to get out there and hope to draw a bigger crowd just by having a community presence there.
“We are actually going to be on site. People can come out and carry their items up or we’ll come to their car. We just want to get the donations.”
The Fill The Bus is being put on by Big Five Community Services and the City of Durant. It goes hand in hand with the Coalition’s Back 2 School Bash they will be having in August.
The list of items requested is a combination of Bryan County school supply lists and all items that are given will be used to fill the backpacks that are given to county students in need.
“We invite people to cone out and if they want to volunteer their time to this, we’ll take volunteers. Or they can volunteer to help to for future events.
“And if they do not want to come out on Saturday’s event, we do have donation boxes around the city.”
