James Austin Mattox, a resident of Mead, Okla., joined his Savior on January 24, 2022, at the age of 82. He was born on November 15, 1939, in Yanush, Okla. to Dillard Austin Mattox and Melvilee Oweta (Bookout) Mattox. James married his sweetheart Lola Davis in Oklahoma City, Okla. on April 24, 2007.
James was a hardworking dedicated man who owned and operated James Overhead Door for 15 years. He was an active member of the Victory Life Church and dedicated much of his time to the Brotherhood Ministry. James enjoyed the competition of hunting, fishing with his nephews, and golfing, but he also enjoyed a good game of football.
Mr. Mattox is survived by his wife Lola Mattox of the home; beloved children: Terry Mattox and his wife Sandy of Harrah, Okla., Cecila Mattox of Conrow, Texa, Vickie Troxel of Choctaw, Okla., David Troxel of Moore, Okla., Jeannie Troxel of Midwest City, Okla., Robert Vaughn and wife JoAnn of Portland, Ore., Frank Vaughn and wife Tammie of Moore, Okla., Jody Martin and wife Beth of Clayton, Okla., Cindra Trout and Bobby of Maysville, Okla., Kim Delk of Oklahoma City, Okla.; nephews, Clark Mattox of Vancouver, Wash., Joe Mattox and wife Deann of Midwest City, Okla., Jeff Mattox of Rio Linda, Calif., Larry Mattox and wife Lisa of Waddle, Ariz., John Mattox and wife Monique of Coos Bay, Ore.; uncle, Ibry Bookout of Chandler, Okla.; niece, Oweta Rodden of Ridge Crest, Calif.; sister-in-law, Jenny Mattox of Little Rock, Ark.; daughter-in-law, Lori Mattox of Liberty, Texas; and is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great- and great-great-grandchildren, and friends.
Mr. Mattox was preceded in death by his parents, Dillard and Oweta Mattox; his oldest son, James “Jimmy” Mattox; his brothers, Ronnie, Howard, Henry, Ernie, Charlie and sister, Pearl Elizabeth.
A funeral service in honor of his life will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 29 at the Victory Life Church in Durant, Okla. with Tim McIntire officiating.
A graveside service will be at 10 a.m., Monday, Jan. 31 at the Cupco Cemetery in Yanush, Okla. with Dillon Trout, Joseph Martin, Justin Woodruff, Terry Mattox, Clark Mattox, Aaron Vaughn, and Justin Krouse as his pallbearers. His honorary pallbearers will be Charles Hanks, Mike Daugherty, Bill Parrish, Jr. Scribner, Donnie Riggs, and Wayne Gridle.
Services are under the direction of Holmes~Coffey~Murray Funeral Home in Durant, Okla.
