Ophelia “Sugar” (Barron) Thomas was the oldest of six children born to Emory and Ethel (Dilbeck) Barron. She passed from this life on Friday, Dec. 10, 2021, at the age of 91. She was born on Jan. 23, 1930 in Coleman, Okla., and the family moved to Savoy, Texas where she graduated from high school.
She married Joe Bailey Thomas in 1947, in Greenville, Texas and they were married for 29 years until his death in January 1976.
Sugar loved her sons dearly. She was a fantastic cook, making sure her family was fed good, nutritious meals. She valued education, she loved reading and encouraged her sons to read and even took frequent trips to the local library. Sugar was fascinated with Indian culture, spending countless hours researching various tribes who inhabited Texoma. She loved looking for relics such as arrowheads and pottery. She loved animals, especially cats.
Left behind to cherish Sugar’s memory are her two sons, Michael W. Thomas of Savoy, Texas, and John D. Thomas and wife Lorena of Italy; her two sisters, Margaret Monroe of Mesquite, Texas and Patsy Hutchins and husband Ronnie of Savoy, Texas, and her two sisters-in-law, Betty Barron and Sharon Barron.
Preceding her in death are her parents, Emory and Ethel Barron; brother, Truman and wife Lorene, Winfred, and Dalton Barron.
A graveside service was held on Monday, Dec. 13, 2021, at the Sunnyside Cemetery in Savoy, Texas with Rev. Chris Merritt officiating.
