On Monday, Oct. 18, 2021, Phyllis Evelyn Chalk Eggenberg fell asleep in Jesus and woke up in Heaven greeted by her loved ones. She leaves a host of family and friends who will miss her ready smile, her loving presence, whit, and her loyal friendship. 
Born to loving parents, Russell and Ethel M. Sparks Chalk on Nov. 12, 1928, in Humbolt, Kan., Phyllis was soon joined by her sister and best friend Irene Chalk Moore (husband B.J). Then came brother Ralph Chalk (wife Mary), sister Helen Chalk Gray (husband Willie) and baby brother Mike Chalk (wife Marti). Mike was born when she was on her Sr. trip. (She also named him).
She married the love of her life Hubert Ray Eggenberg on Jan. 24, 1954. They were blessed with three sons: Russell L. Eggenberg, Phillip R. Eggenberg and Ricky L. Eggenberg (wife Sheila). Her beloved grandchildren: Russell Eggenberg Jr., Brandon Eggenberg, Phyllis J. Eggenberg, Dustin Eggenberg (deceased), James Keith Eggenberg (wife Jeri). Haley Eggenberg, Lathe Eggenberg (wife Jessica) and Nikki Hammond (husband Cory).
She graduated from Calera High School and received her bachelor’s degree in 1953 and her master’s degree in 1970. She continued seeking knowledge through courses at SOSU after graduation. She began her teaching career at Gerty, Okla. in 1952 and taught one year and got married. She followed Hubert to the oil field in Pyote, Texas where she taught eight years and her three sons were born. They then loaded up and moved back to Durant. She taught at Blue, Calera, Mead and then Silo. She taught at Silo from 1970-1986 and became Teacher of the Year for 1985-1986. She retired in in 1988 and started her second career as night manager at the Crisis Center in Durant from 1988-2006. 
Her passion was oil painting, ceramics and making porcelain dolls for family and friends. She loved serving others and making a difference by belonging to many benevolent organizations such as Eager Homemakers where she served as president and many other offices. She served as Star Points in the Durant Chapter 17 Eastern Star. She belonged to Rebekahs and the Garden Club, her passion included gardening especially roses and she was blessed with a green thumb. She also had a passion to help others no matter what walk of life they came from. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church, and she deeply loved the Lord and her Church.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Russell and Ethel Chalk; husband, Hubert Eggenberg and grandson, Dustin Eggenberg.
She is survived by numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and their spouses, cousins and a host of friends and relatives.
A celebration of her life will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2021, at Brown’s Funeral Service Chapel. Bro. Anthony Williams will officiate. The family will receive friends at 1 p.m., prior to the service.
Interment will follow in Highland Cemetery.
