In 1954, she moved from Caddo, Okla. to Calera, Okla. and graduated from Calera High in 1959. She then went to Dallas to work for Fidelity Union Life Insurance for two years. Barbara married Larry Guy Young, who was in the Air Force. They moved to Georgia for 1 1/2 years then to France for three years. Then upon returning to the states, they moved to Louisiana and Washington D.C. Larry was sent to southeast Asia for a year while Barbara and the children resided in Plano where she worked for Varo.
Larry returned in July 1969 then the family moved back to Oklahoma. He started college and Barbara went to work at Farmers Home Admin and then at Pillsbury for 11 years, Cherokee Telephone for eight years and then quit due to an illness. Barbara did bookkeeping for J & S Manufacturing part-time and began substitute teaching for six years, after which she finally retired. She loved her family more than anything and adored her grandkids. She was an avid reader, loved painting, crafts, gardening, flowers, and traveling with friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband Larry Young and grandson Nicholas Manners.
Survivors include her son, Steven Young and wife Kim of Colbert and their children Tanner and Carson; daughter, Shelly Self and husband Randy and their son Derek.
A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Friday, June 5, 2020 at Rose Hill Cemetery in Calera with Angie Bauer officiating. A come and go visitation will begin Thursday from 12 p.m.-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
