Sherman man killed in DUI accident in Colbert

COLBERT – One man was killed in a two-vehicle accident early Wednesday morning in south Bryan County.

Brittney Nicole Schmidt, 25 of Colbert, was driving a 2012 Dodge northbound on U.S. Highway 69/75 just after 1 a.m. about two-tenths of a mile north of Leavenworth Trail, when her vehicle struck a 2001 GMC van in the rear of that vehicle, according to a report from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

The van was driven by Kristin Daniel Patton, 42 of Sherman, Texas.

Patton’s vehicle departed the roadway to the right and rolled twice. He was ejected an unknown distance.

The Dodge departed roadway to the left and struck a cable barrier.

Patton died at the scene from head, trunk external and internal injuries. Neither Schmidt, nor passenger Casey L. Summer, 37 of Dallas, were injured.

According to the report, the seat belts were equipped in both vehicles. Schmidt and Summer were wearing their seat belts, but Patton was not.

Schmidt’s condition was listed as DUI and the cause of the accident was listed as DUI in the report.

The OHP was assisted in the investigation by the Colbert Police Department, Calera Police Department, Bryan County Sherriff’s Department, Colbert and Cartwright Fire Departments and the Colbert EMS.
