Herb Whalin

Herbert “Herb” Eastel Whalin, Jr., of Silo, Okla. passed from this life on Monday, May 13, 2019 at the age of 85. He was born on Monday, July 3, 1933 in Nida, Okla. to Herbert Eastel, Sr. and Olivia Jane (Smith) Whalin.

He married Billie Jean Doyle in Lovington, N.M. on July 15, 1961. After the passing of his first wife he later married Loretta Gatlin Norris in Mead, Okla. on March 3, 2007.

Herb moved to west Texas and came back to Bryan County in 1993. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1952-1956. Later he went to work for Grain Elevator in Muleshoe, Texas for 10 years and then went to work for the Texas Highway Departemnt for 22 years before retiring to Silo. He was a member of the Woodmen of the World, American Legion and the Calvary Baptist Church. His hobbies include reading, working in the yard, mowing, and taking care of hummingbirds.

He was preceded in death by his parents; mother of his children, Billie Jean Doyle; brothers. Luther Whalin, Aubry Lummus, Jr., Don Lummus, Gerald Lummus; sister Willema Kerby; sister-in-law Clara Gatlin; brother-in-law Clifford Kerby, Ray Gatlin, Leo Gatlin; special cousin Sue Price and nephew Monty Lummus.

Survivors include his wife Loretta (Gatlin) Whalin of the home; sons Randall Whalin and wife Krystyna of Amarillo, Texas, Sam Whalin and wife Lisa of Muleshoe, Texas, Perry Whalin of Silo, Okla., Christopher Whalin and wife Lindsey of Durant, Okla.; daughter Debbie Hammer and husband Paul of Muleshoe, Texas; brothers Kenneth Lummus and wife Sue of Silo, Okla.; brothers-in-law J.T. Gatlin of Durant, Okla., Wayne Gatlin of Durant, Okla., Cloyce Gatlin and wife Wannell of Mead, Okla.; step-sons Robert Hall and wife Sarah of Roundrock, Texas, Michael Hall and wife Doreen of Schertz, Texas, William Hall and wife Christine of Kingsland, Texas, Jerry Hill and Tammy Thompson of Durant, Okla., Cloyce Hill of Durant, Okla.; step-daughter Tammy Crosby of Bradford, Ohio; sisters-in-law Fran Gatlin, Miki Lummus, Alagean Lummus, Susan Lummus, Sue Gatlin; Special Cousin Margaret Smith; Navy friends Roy “Corky” O’Donvan and Wilburn Pierce, 29 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and numerous other extended family.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, May 25, 2019 at Calvary Baptist Church. Bro. Darel Bunch will officiate.
