DALLAS – The Southeastern quarterback at the helm of one of the program’s best seasons ever helped the Newton Eagles to a Texas state title in football on Thursday.

Greg Neece left the head coaching position at Kirbyville, Texas to take the spot of offensive coordinator at Newton prior to this season. The Eagles defeated Gunter, 40-16, in the 3A-2 championship at AT&T Field, giving Newton its fourth state championship in school history and first since 2005.

With Neece calling the plays, Newton scored nearly 53 points per game on its way to a 15-0 season.

Neece was the starting QB for the then-Savages in 1988 as Southeastern went 10-1 and defeated the No. 1 Central Arkansas Bears, 21-14 in overtime, in Durant. SE fell to Adams State (Colo.) the next week.

The Edmond Memorial grad led Southeastern to a 21-9-2 record in his time (1986-1988) in Durant.
