The Equipt youth group at Community Christian Church in Durant is holding a fundraising dinner on Sunday to get ready for a mission trip to Mexico this summer.

The ‘Mexican Pile-On’ lunch is being held to bring in money to send 20 people to Anahuac, Mexico. The town is about 915 miles from Durant and approximately 50 miles west-southwest of Laredo, Texas.

Youth director Adrean Stinnett is one of five adults to be going with the 15 teenagers, seventh graders through seniors.

“We are going to Casa De La Esperanza orphanage for seven days working with the students that are there, with ages ranging from 5 to 17 years old,” Stinnett said. “We’re going to be doing different crafts with them and Bible studies, as well as some painting projects and building projects. We’ll also be going out into the community and passing out food and doing some ministry out on the streets.”

Katy Herndon, 15, said she is looking forward to the trip.

“We are going to be spending time with the kids, building them things and just loving on them,” Herndon said. “That’s the most important thing.”

“I want to go on this trip because I feel like it will help me figure out what missions are really like. I just really feel like I need to go.”

The fundraiser will run from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Take-out orders are available as well.

“We’re going to have a piñata set up and a silent auction with some bake sale stuff set up, with items made by the youth that are going,” Stinnett said. “And there will be a couple of other items, too.

It is a donation-only fundraiser to help the youth, who are each required to raise $600.

“It’s just come and go,” Stinnett said. “And when you’re here, you can ask the kids about the trip and what they are expecting out of it.”
